How Does Solar Lights Work ?
Solar lights operate by harnessing sunlight and converting it into electricity through photovoltaic (PV) conversion. These lights feature solar panels composed of multiple photovoltaic cells, typically made of semiconductor materials like silicon. When sunlight strikes the solar panel, photons dislodge electrons from the atoms in the semiconductor material, generating an electric current. Some solar lights incorporate a charge controller to manage the flow of electricity from the solar panel to the rechargeable battery, which is often nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or lithium-ion. During the day, the solar panel charges the battery with the electricity it generates, storing it for later use. At night or when light levels drop, a light sensor or timer activates the LED light, powered by the stored electricity from the battery. LED lights are favored for their energy efficiency and longevity. Additionally, certain solar lights may include a light controller to regulate when the LED light activates based on ambient light levels, optimizing energy usage.
