Kochi Airport to Install Two More Floating Solar Plants while Tata Power Bags 110 MW Solar Project in Kerala
Famed as the world's first solar-powered airport, Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) comes in news again for installing two more floating solar plants in the 130-acre CIAL golf course. Installed over two artificial lakes, this solar floating power plant with 1,300 photovoltaic panels can produce 452 KWh, raising the capacity to 40MWp. It could produce 1.60 lakh units of power daily towards the daily consumption of 1.30 lakh units.
In a press statement CIAL officially stated that it is one of the biggest floating solar power plants in the state and by taking this step CIAL ensures its policy of being self-sustainable of power and using green-energy.
The CIAL had been honoured with the 'Champions of the Earth’ award in September 2018 for its entrepreneurial vision and the use of sustainable energy. The CIAL solar floating plant that came around at a cost of Rs2 crore is made up of cost-effective high-density polyethylene floats with the help of French Technology. It is connected to the KSEB (Kerala State Electricity Board) power grid.
Founder Managing Director, VJ Kurian, CIAL, said that they are committed to the protection of nature by reducing the carbon footprints and the inauguration of a 12 MW solar power plant in August 2015 spoke volumes about the commitment. CIAL also nurtures a dream to become the second largest power producer in the state after KSEB.Â
Tata Power has won in a bid announced by KSEBL in September 2020 and received a Letter of Award (LOA) from the KSEBL. The plant is expected to generate about 274 million units (MUs) of energy per year and would be supplied to KSEBL under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that is valid for a period of 25 years from the commercial operation date. According to the agreement, the project has to be started within the 18 months from the date of execution of the PPA. This project would increase Tata Power's renewable capacity to 4,032 MW.
